Katie Reeves PhD, PMHNP-BC

I've always felt proud of my curiosity and deep love for people. But, I’ve resented being called an ‘out of the box’ thinker. Truth is, I’ve felt blind to what or where the box even is. So, I became an expert at finding patterns in chaos, hoping desperately to fit in. Eventually (and maybe unsurprisingly) I found a home in behavioral health, specializing in the care of suicidal and self-harming adolescents; a group that never shied from expressing a similar distaste for the enigmatic ‘box’.

It became clear very quickly that psychiatry also struggled to properly delineate its contents. Diagnoses were broad, symptom management relied on trial and error treatments, and there wasn't enough relevant science from which to make precise and timely decisions. I seized the opportunity to broaden my scope and utilize my lifelong skills, working on ways to precisely measure emotion to better understand what we mean when we say that we feel anxious or depressed.

Once again I'm attempting to outline the damn box. But this time there is no 'inside' or 'outside' -- no 'healthy' or 'diseased'. This time I'm building tools to make sure each of us fits well within our own bounds, getting exactly what we need when we need it, and aiming to finally make safe, effective, and timely mental health care possible.
